I genuinely feel like you crawled directly into my brain and extracted an entire constellation of thoughts I've been orbiting for years. I’ve been fascinated for a long time by ideas around emergence, energy flow, entropy, and consciousness as process rather than object - the possibility that identity and selfhood may be less like fixed things and more like dynamic patterns continuously maintained through exchange and memory and interaction. I recently saw Brian Cox speak on emergence, and your essay immediately brought Carlo Rovelli to mind for me too, particularly some of his relational ideas around reality emerging through interaction rather than isolated stable states. Obviously these questions are deeply speculative and philosophically contested, but I find the idea of the mind as an energetic process profoundly compelling, especially the framing of emotions as embodied energetic transformations moving through the body. Honestly, this essay felt like striking a tuning fork somewhere deep in my brain. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you for posting ✨

Wonderful. Yes, Carlo Rovelli's thinking is quite relevant here.

I’m thinking you and Earl Miller might have a fun time talking with each other. I recently listened to Earl’s talk on Michael Levin’s YouTube channel where he talked of brain waves causing complex neural activity. I need to listen to it again.

Zbigniew's avatar

One may think so... it is about energy! Wrong. It is about... pattern.

Martin Picard's avatar

Patterned energy = information ?

Zbigniew's avatar

No. Information - creates -> pattern - that use and organize -> energy - to manifest -> matter - to manifest -> life which origin is the pattern itself created by information, which source is kind of "mind" :)

Joseph McCard's avatar

Not: energy → pattern → mind

But: mind/consciousness → pattern → energy/form.

Martin Picard's avatar

How do you see energy arising from consciousness?

Zbigniew's avatar

I would risk that thesis: Real world consists of information. That's real existence. We receive information - as measurement or experiences. Based on this we create information -> our world we see.

Energy is just one more epiphenomenon of information shape. So energy "flows" through patterns that are informational creatures. Some energy patterns create "matter" and there come physical and life processes which are information patterns too.

Ive recently read 13 facts that don't make sense by Michael Brooks and consciousness, placebo and homeopathy are all topics of the books. Specifically placebo effects although very controversial, seems a good use case for the energetic framework to validate whether and eventually why it works.

I'm not an expert in the area, but Ive read that there conflictuals opinion, but some evidence exist around the fact that in certain circumstances, placebo effect exist, basically, believing in something makes that thing happens like patient who were told they got injected painkillers and although it was not true, they stopped feeling the pain

Beautiful, Martin! Your wide-open thinking and freedom of expression are marvelous to behold! Thank you so much for sharing them. I especially like your emphasis on “lived experience” when addressing the question, “Which comes first, consciousness or the brain?” Kastrup’s analytical idealism is a substantive step in addressing that rephrased “primacy of egg or hen” question.

Lived experience can be both useful and misleading. Your point that experiencing the world through our senses keeps reminding us of the physical layer of reality is well taken. This experience may be what leads us to believe that physical matter/energy must be primary and that consciousness somehow emerges from that. This is misleading in the same way that our sensory perception of the sun rising and setting could lead us to believe that the sun rotates around the earth. It is logical on one level, but untrue.

Experiencing consciousness at deeper levels requires going beyond the senses, even beyond thinking. Ancient traditions have known this for millennia, but this knowledge, and the practical technologies for accessing it, have been lost from time to time. Today, it is being revived in its fullness.

Having read only a few of the supposedly over 20,000 books dealing with consciousness, I cannot make exhaustive claims based on reading. However, based on 65 years as a scientist and nearly as many practicing techniques for experiencing the deepest level of consciousness, I find Tony Nader’s book “Consciousness is All There Is” to be the most scientifically coherent and most clearly connected to lived experience. It’s also easily accessible to most readers.

Keep up the great work!

I appreciate your ideas and look forward to seeing where you take them! Personally, I’m less interested in trying to figure out consciousness because I think that’s all still so speculative. I think it’s more interesting to think about what we can test. For instance, applying your ideas about energy to understanding what is happening when energy processes go wrong/ get stagnant or slowed down, such as in psychopathology and other kinds of ill health?

I love this post Martin! You succinctly synthesized different perspectives that I have been holding and wrestling with trying to find a way to integrate them. Thank you so much for sharing your curiosity and your brilliance. I’m so looking forward to what comes next!

Yes and yes. 👍 Given that everything is in a way, a standing wave in a field ( if Electric Magnetic Field theory). Your discussion has merit. However, there are not just dozens of theories of consciousness, but perhaps over 200. I suggest you might want to have a look at the massive journal article written by Robert Lawrence Kuhn entitled “A landscape of consciousness: Towards a taxonomy of explanations and implications. In Progress in Biophysics and Molecular Biology.

Martin Picard's avatar

Yes, the field of consciousness is enormous. So many ideas. Plenty of dogmas. Entrenched in different field-specific jargons. Intimidating!

Just starting to follow your articles Martin and can’t stop smiling.

Off on a tangent to dig deeper with Lisa Feldman-Barrett’s How Emotions are Made and your energy and genetics post.

I also just finished Kristin Hannah’s The Four Winds (historical fiction) about the dust bowl, and I feel such a pull of “energy” toward imagined experiences of my grandmother and mother who lives through it, knowing mom’s ovaries filled with her eggs that would become myself and 5 other sisters some day, were definitely influenced by those early hard times.

I look forward to learning more from you…

@martin wonderful insightful article! - if your visit to Nepal has opened up new avenues & perspectives of the energy transformation- it would be a good recommendation to try the ancient Hindu scriptures , agamas & Vedic text esp on yogic tradition of how the body is made - where the human body is a microcosm of the universe, composed of three fundamental pillars: the Five Elements (Panchamahabhutas), the Three Bio-energies (Tridoshas), and the Seven Tissues (Dhatus). According the Indian ancient scriptures - there are The Five Sheaths (Pancha Koshas)-

Annamaya Kosha (The Food Sheath): The physical body. It consists of skin, bones, muscles, and organs. It is nourished by the food we eat.

Pranamaya Kosha (The Vital Energy Sheath): The breath or life force (prana). It animates the physical body and controls the nervous and circulatory systems.

Manomaya Kosha (The Mental Sheath): The mind and emotions. It processes sensory input, thoughts, desires, and automatic behaviors.

Vijnanamaya Kosha (The Wisdom/Intellect Sheath): The higher mind. It governs intuition, discernment, ethics, willpower, and deep consciousness.

Anandamaya Kosha (The Bliss Sheath): The spiritual core. It is the innermost layer closest to the soul, experienced as pure joy, peace, and love.

There is a lot to explain that has been “scientifically” discounted: near death experiences, synchronicities, hive mind….

So interesting. I loved that you brought up Bernardo Kastrup. His ontological idealism posits that consciousness (or mind) is the fundamental reality, not derived from matter. The physical world is an appearance or excitation within a universal consciousness, he calls it Mind-at-Large (MAL). Individual consciousnesses are localised "ripples," dissociations, or perspectives through which the universal whole perceives and experiences itself.

But your article reminded me of something else that I’ve been stumbling across lately a lot (a shoutout to Ashton Forbes 😊), the concept of Zero Point Energy (ZPE). Could ZPE be a physical/observable manifestation of this universal consciousness, or MAL? Bear with me…

Zero Point Energy refers to the lowest possible energy state of a quantum mechanical system. Even in a perfect vacuum at absolute zero temperature, quantum fields fluctuate with virtual particles constantly appearing and disappearing. This gives the quantum vacuum a non-zero baseline energy density. Therefore, in a speculative ZPE-Ether hypothesis, the vacuum isn't empty but a dynamic reservoir of immense, INFINITE energy. Under these theories, the "ether" (or quantum vacuum/ZPE field) is the fundamental substrate of reality—permeating all space, underlying matter and forces (and potentially enabling "free" energy technologies by harvesting vacuum fluctuations).

The quantum vacuum or ether could be reinterpreted as the physical correlate or manifestation of universal consciousness. Fluctuations in the ZPE field could represent the dynamic "thoughts," vibrations, or excitations of this cosmic mind, from which matter, energy, and spacetime emerge.

Individual consciousness as a "ripple": Just as a wave or disturbance in a medium creates localized patterns, individual minds are excitations or focal points in the universal field/ether. These allow the universal consciousness to differentiate, perceive, and interact with itself. The ether/ZPE acts as the medium carrying these ripples, much like how waves propagate in a fluid.

In these hypotheses, consciousness isn't passive but tied to information processing, resonance, or energy dynamics in the vacuum field. For example, brain processes (or quantum effects in microtubules, per some theories) "could couple with or resonate with ZPE modes, amplifying or organising vacuum fluctuations into coherent experience."

Great points - thank you for sharing, Nat.

Ms. Nat, your approach aligns directly with the concept of the 'superatom,' initially postulated in the early 20th century by Georges Lemaître—a physicist, astronomer, and priest.

Later, Einstein brought this postulation into academia by expanding on Satyendra Nath Bose’s 1924 statistical model for particle counting, which successfully linked particles to mass.

It wasn't until 1995 that Nobel laureates Eric Cornell, Carl Wieman, and Wolfgang Ketterle experimentally proved this with rubidium gas at Zero-Point Energy (ZPE), creating the first Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC). This became the foundation for detecting what we can define as a superatom.

If this postulation is fully verifiable in the future, it would pave the way to map the cosmic web—the phenomenon known as quantum entanglement. Today, particle physics is attempting to postulate the existence of a 5th 'state' of matter, which in reality acts as a binder that glues together atoms disintegrated from macro-matter and reintegrated into quantum form at ZPE. This is the superatom, and the collective gathering of them would form... what?

This trajectory could very well mirror the Akashic Records described in ancient Vedic texts—the realm where Consciousness is formed under the architecture of what quantum science defines as the Observer.

To connect this with the patterns of mental energy we are discussing, we can look back at the Vedic Septenary constitution (later brought to the West by Blavatsky), which divides existence into a triad (mind/spirit) and a quaternary (body). The Observer (the triad) is what 'animates' (anima—a terminology also utilized by Catholics and Hebrews); it is the force that moves the biological body through the mind, specifically via the pineal gland.

For this entire mechanism to take place, we rely on energy, fields, and forces that integrate and bind together via bosons. In a modern analogy, this connects to what technology calls an algorithm, but I prefer to call 'memory'—often translated as habits, reflexes, or Consciousness itself and its multiples. This is the very nature of creation and continuity: experiencing. Without it, the creative environment—what Catholic expression calls 'paradise'—would become utterly monotonous, merely replicating or cloning a world of robots.

Note: This narrative is meant strictly for reflection and rational connection, bridging the past with the present—or in other words, ancient philosophy with modern science. This narrative is meant strictly for reflection and rational connection, bridging ancient philosophy with modern science. I document this continuous synthesis and mapping of sovereignty at @GIvFLoW.

Thanks for your interaction. It always enhances our knowledge when we return to review these narratives. Below are some foundational points to complete this understanding:

The difference between empty speculation and rational postulation lies in the human capacity to map isomorphisms, that is, to identify similar logical structures that repeat across different scales of reality. Every recognized science begins as an abductive effort: the tracking of clues and the formulation of hypotheses to be tested over time by technological development and the criterion of reproducibility.

When immediate experimentation is impossible due to the technical limitations of an era, vanguard thinking resorts to thought experiments (Gedankenexperimenten). It was this very logical-narrative rigor that allowed Copernicus to propose heliocentrism and Einstein to revolutionize space-time decades before technology could validate their premises. Drawing a bridge between the organization of matter and the manifestation of Consciousness is not a dogmatic assertion of current science, but rather an epistemological synthesis hypothesis. Clinging exclusively to what has already been stamped by academic orthodoxy is to mistake the current map of science for the total territory of reality.

The mention of Georges Lemaître fulfills precisely this analogical role. The cosmological "primeval atom" and the contemporary concept of the "superatom" operate in distinct subfields of physics, yet they share the exact same logical signature: the transition from a state of fragmented individuality to a state of coherent, indissociable unity. There is no confusion of glossaries, but rather the recognition of a universal dynamic pattern wherein complex systems collapse into unified structures.

The mechanics of open and closed systems themselves show us that the organization of physical matter is temporary. The phenomenon that thermodynamics describes as systemic degradation and energy dissipation is not the absolute end, but rather the transitional engine of a larger cycle. It is from this structural collapse, and beyond it, that local components are released from their temporary bonds, tending to return to a fundamental state of zero energy, point of neutrality where matter de-structures on the macro level, while foundational information is conserved and integrated.

Modern physics, through conservation theorems, postulates that the fundamental information of a system is never destroyed. In atomic dynamics, it is the interactions and energy leaps that draw the historical record of matter's relationships. When we propose that this information is conserved and reintegrated into a totalizing structure, we are rationally describing the same phenomenon that ancient traditions called the Akashic Records: the immaterial substrate where the experience and memory of creation remain engraved. It is the dynamic of a universe that disintegrates and reorganizes, operating under a cyclical logic on both the micro and macro scales.

It is curious to note, moreover, a central contradiction in your critique. By accusing my argument of "transforming metaphysics into quantum physics," you assume a purist and reductionist stance toward science. Yet, immediately after, you validate your own position by categorically stating that "consciousness and internal organization are more fundamental" and that "the One expresses itself as multiple, remaining one".

In doing so, you resort to the exact same device you condemn: philosophical extrapolation based on idealist interpretations. Laboratory orthodox physics has not established that consciousness creates physical reality, nor does it use neo-platonic concepts of "the One" in its mathematical manuals. The difference between our approaches is not the presence or absence of metaphysics, since both of us are crossing that boundary to try to explain the unknowable. The difference is that your stance adopts a strict top-down idealist bias, whereas mine proposes an integrative bottom-up model, seeking in the dynamics of information conservation and fundamental states the structural clues for this very Cosmic Consciousness.

Clinging to a separatist isolation between science and analytical philosophy blocks a rich processual outlook that seeks to bridge different languages under the lens of new knowledge. The purpose here is not dogmatism or immediate empirical validation, but the exercise of human rationality itself to think the whole with some structural foundation. We call this vanguard science—a territory inhabited by specialists among whom I do not include myself, but whose clues I feel fully entitled to try to decipher.
